Nokia E63 surfaces, brings little surprises

After several leaks the Nokia E63 finally got its official announcement today. Much like the rumor had it the handset is a slightly downgraded and more budget friendly version of the E71. Most of the business functionality is still there so the lower price tag might actually be enough to make it quite a success amidst the global financial crisis.

The Nokia E63 has got a full hardware QWERTY keypad and comes with a slim waistline of 13mm. Its body is lacking the metal finish of the E71 and is entirely made of plastic instead. Most surprisingly however it will have touch sensitive Navi wheel functionality and a 3.5mm audio jack that lack on E71.

The phone has a 2.36″ 16M color QVGA display and up to 110 MB of internal memory, which can be expanded through the microSD card slot. According to the press release the Nokia E63 users will also have 1GB of online storage at their disposal though the latest Nokia service called Files on Ovi.

The Nokia E63 packs quad-band GSM and dual-band UMTS connectivity (which comes in three different flavors) but unlike the E71 has no HSDPA support. The other methods of data transfer on-board are microUSB port, and Bluetooth (A2DP and EDR) and Wi-Fi.

The Nokia E63 also lacks GPS and replaces the 3.2 MP autofocus camera of its elder brother with a 2 MP fixed focus snapper. The handset will start shipping in the coming weeks with an estimated retail price of 200 euro (250 US dollars) before taxes or subsides.

Photos of what appears to be Nokia’s next business flagship E75 appeared online. This is the third public appearance of the Nokia E75 after the promo video that surfaced a while ago and the first portion of live photos that leaked. This time the quality of the photos is better and they give a better impression of what the phone actually looks like.

Sporting the hybrid form factor Nokia E75 will feature both a regular 12-key alphanumeric keypad and a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard. The handset will also come with a metallic back panel, much like the Nokia E71. Some of the other known features of this business powerhouse include a 2.4″ display, a 3.2 megapixel camera and Wi-Fi. One might also easily guess GPS, Bluetooth and USB and probably a 2.5mm audio jack.

The spanking new Nokia 6260 slide easily steals the spotlight with Wi-Fi, GPS, 320 x 480 pixels display, and a 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics. We bet that reading those specs the words “dumb phone” or “S40″ would never cross you mind. But the new Nokia 6260 slide is exactly that – a feature phone running the latest S40 6th edition user interface. Say hello to the next S40 super phone.

The unassumingly named Nokia 6260 slide has the same conservative design borrowed from the current 6xxx lineup (Nokia 6600 slide and Nokia 6210 Navigator). Obviously, the lack of original design ideas is not plaguing only Sony Ericsson recently.

Still we can’t really brace our excitement as the 6260 slide is the best thing that has happened to the Nokia S40 family for quite some time now.

The Nokia 6260 slide sports a 2.4-inch 16M color display with the one-off resolution of 320 x 480 pixels (HVGA). It has quad-band GSM support plus HSDPA 10.2 Mbps. As we already mentioned, there is also Wi-Fi and a built-in GPS receiver with A-GPS support.

The integrated 5 megapixel autofocus camera is accompanied by a dual LED flash. Sadly, it will only be capable of recording VGA video at 15 fps as most recent midrange S40 handsets.

There is 200MB of internal memory and a microSD slot with support for up to 8GB cards. The 360-degree D-pad is another first for the S40 lineup – it’s a nice enhancement, which sounds as a cool addition to the digital map scouring or the mobile web browsing.

Speaking of web browsing, the Nokia 6260 will be the first feature phone to sport the awesome Nokia WebKit Open Source Browser, previously available only on the Symbian S60 smartphones. It’s one of the best mobile browsers currently boasting a virtual mouse pointer interface, incremental page rendering, visual history browsing and page mini-map. Flash Lite 3 support is also added to the S40 platform, which should make watching flash videos a breeze – another first for a feature phone.

Stereo Bluetooth 2.1, a microUSB port that’s used for charging, and a 2.5mm A/V jack with TV-out functionality are all aboard the 6260 slide.

The only contemporary feature that seems missing on the Nokia 6260 slide is the accelerometer sensor that is making its way throughout handsets of various makes and walks of life. We wonder when Nokia will add that to their feature phones. But let’s not digress, the new 6260 still looks like a helluva performer.

The Nokia 6260 will be available in beige or black in the beginning of 2009 at an estimated price of 299 euro before taxes and subsidies. That sounds a bit much as it will have a hard time competing with similarly equipped Nokia smartphones. Still, only time will tell.

Mumbai death toll jumps to 125

The death toll from the series of attacks in Mumbai, India, has risen to 125, Mumbai police said today. Another 327 people were reported wounded. Earlier, people thought to be freed hostages were seen walking from the Oberoi Hotel, the scene of one of the attacks. CNN correspondent Sara Sidner reports it also appears the siege at the Taj Mahal Hotel is over. The U.S. State Department says three U.S. citizens were injured in the attacks. full story

Yet another fashion brand is just about to enter the mobile phones business. Samsung and Hugo Boss have come up with a special Hugo Boss edition of the fully touch-operated F480 Tocco.

The handset user interface and wallpapers have been designed in collaboration with the famous fashion company. The cover of the phone now carries the Hugo Boss logo and the phone also has a set of special ringtones that are said to reflect the fashion company’s style. The final difference from the original Samsung F480 Tocco is the specially designed Bluetooth handset that comes in the retail package.

In case you need a quick memory refresh here are the most important features of Samsung F480. It is a tri-band phone with HSDPA 7.2Mbps support and an ample 2.8″ touchscreen QVGA display. Nokia N79 is certainly one of the best equipped bars on the market. In fact there is very little (and certainly not too important) features that the phone lacks. The best part is it excuses itself from the company of most recent Nseries devices and makes an impact with its own distinct appearance.

If you are eying this attractive package, it currently goes at about 320 euro (400 US dollars). Let’s now have a brief look around for what else that kind of cash can get you.

We’ve been there already with Nokia N85. A complete multimedia gadget with full-ranging connectivity, Nokia N85 comes out as a potential upgrade for a number of Nseries phones – from the classic N73 to the imaging headliner N82.

N79 is of course the direct successor of N78 – it doesn’t look it and that’s a downright improvement, on top of the boosted camera.

Nokia N82 is another handset that should feel threatened. While it packs a better camera and xenon flash, the reduced weight advantage, looks and the new UI version count in favor of the N79. The FM transmitter might also play a part here though with the N82 costing 30 euro less, we may as well act it square.

We should also count the experienced fighter Nokia N95 and its upgrade – the Nokia N95 8GB. Once an industry leading device, the N95 is now comfortably settled in the upper mid-range, luring potential buyers with a competitive price tag and what’s still one of the best displays in the business.

It will hardly pass as the latest software package available but it still can handle most of the workload you give it. And the number of available third-party applications is maybe infinite.

As to the real competition, Samsung i7110 comes to mind straight away. Having the same form factor and virtually identical set of features the only difference between it and the Nokia N79 is the slightly larger display with OLED technology. However we are yet to see how they stack up in terms of pricing.

Nokia reveals phone testing routine

Ever wondered what kind of testing the hardware of the phone gets before being released on the market? Today Nokia released a video showing more details about its testing facility and the testing process itself. The footage is from one of the 11 Nokia test centers documenting some of the more than 200 mechanical tests that each phone goes through before hitting the shelves.

As you might have guessed the tests vary quite substantially. The everyday use tests include placing the device with a shaker with hard particles to simulate placing your handset in a bag or a pocket with things such as key rings. Splash resistance is also checked to make sure that a cup of spilled coffee isn’t going to ruin your evening by turning your phone in wreckage. Dust resistance is also properly inspected.

The resistance to various weather conditions is also examined. Those include extreme hotness and coldness, humidity and continuous exposure to sun, which might cause bleaching.

The funniest part is the robustness testing when they simulate dropping the phone on the concrete, twisting it and applying strong pressure to it. Admit it – it is a nice thing to look at when it is not your phone that gets tortured.

Finally the phone keypad endurance is tested by special robotic arms that simulate several hundred thousand presses on each key. We wonder if Sony Ericsson did this test for the S500 and W580 that earned their sorry reputations for having faulty keypads.

We certainly hope that thanks to this intensive testing the endurance of the Nokia phones will improve. It is not too long since some of even the highest-end phones of the Finnish manufacturer used to have paint that is easily peeled off and frames a bit too fragile.

Obama’s cell phone records breached.

Records from a cell phone used by President-elect Obama were improperly breached, apparently by employees of the cell phone company, Verizon Wireless said Thursday.

An Obama spokesman said the transition team was told Verizon Wireless workers looked through billing records.

“This week we learned that a number of Verizon Wireless employees have, without authorization, accessed and viewed President-Elect Barack Obama’s personal cell phone account,” Lowell McAdam, Verizon Wireless president and CEO, said in a statement.

“All employees who have accessed the account — whether authorized or not — have been put on immediate leave, with pay.”

The Obama transition team was notified Wednesday by Verizon of the breach, said team spokesman Robert Gibbs. He said the president-elect no longer uses the phone.

McAdam said the device on the account was a simple voice flip-phone, not a BlackBerry or other smartphone designed for e-mail or other data services, so none of Obama’s e-mail could have been accessed.

Verizon Wireless, meanwhile, has launched an internal probe to determine whether Obama’s information was simply shared among employees or whether “the information of our customer had in any way been compromised outside our company, and this investigation continues,” McAdam said in an internal company e-mail obtained by CNN.

“Employees with legitimate business needs for access will be returned to their positions, while employees who have accessed the account improperly and without legitimate business justification will face appropriate disciplinary action,” McAdam said, “up to and including termination.”

The company has alerted “the appropriate federal law enforcement authorities,” McAdam said.

Gibbs said that while the Secret Service has been notified, he is not aware of any criminal investigation. He said he believes it was billing records that were accessed.

Gibbs said that anyone viewing the records likely would have been able to see phone numbers and the frequency of calls Obama made, but that “nobody was monitoring voicemail or anything like that.

Madonna, Ritchie granted quick divorce.

Pop superstar Madonna and film director Guy Ritchie have moved a step closer to divorce after a session at Britain’s High Court in London Friday.

A judge granted them a preliminary decree of divorce.

The couple — neither of whom was in court Friday — now have six weeks and a day before their divorce becomes final.

The two-part divorce is standard in Britain. The window of time allows anyone who objects to the divorce — or has changed their minds — to notify the court.

The couple married at Scotland’s Skibo Castle eight years ago.

They have three children — Rocco, born to the couple in 2000; David, adopted from Malawi; and Lourdes, Madonna’s daughter from her previous relationship with dancer Carlos Leon.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (CNN) — A British couple convicted for having sex on a public beach in Dubai will not face jail after a judge suspended their prison sentences, their lawyer said Tuesday.

The couple, Michelle Palmer and Vincent Acors, had faced a three-month sentence, but they were freed on bail in October pending an appeal.

Hassan Mattar, one of their lawyers, said he was trying to get permission for Palmer — who worked in Dubai — to stay in the United Arab Emirates, and for Acors to travel back to Britain. Acors had been on a business trip to Dubai when he was arrested.

The United Arab Emirates, where Dubai is located, is home to thousands of expatriates and is among the most moderate Gulf states. Still, the oil-rich kingdom adheres to certain Islamic rules.

Palmer and Acors were arrested on a public beach shortly after midnight on July 5. Police charged them with illicit relations, public indecency, and public intoxication. A court found them guilty in October and fined them 1,000 dirhams ($367) for the charge of public indecency.

Both denied they had intercourse. And during the trial, Mattar argued that the public prosecutor failed to produce corroborative evidence against his clients on the first two charges, though he said both tested positive for liquor.

Motorola Attila leaks, runs on WinMo 6.1 Professional

Photos of a new fully touch-operated Motorola handset leaked online. Dubbed Motorola Attila, the phone has a strange iPhone-ish theme but looks pretty decent otherwise. According to the source the Attila will be the first Motorola to run on the Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro platform. It is also the first Motorola WinMo device without keyboard.

Another first for Motorola is the trackball navigation that we are mostly used to seeing on Blackberry phones. Some of the highlight features of the Motorola Attila include tri-band 3G with HSPA, Wi-Fi and Qualcomm 7201A chipset. This might suggest a fast 528 Mhz CPU and GPS. The Motorola Attila display will be a 2.8″ one with QVGA resolution.

We are yet to see an official announcement of Motorola Attila for more information on the release date and the pricing of the phone.
